Public & Regulatory Law

For over 30 years, the Public and Regulatory Law Department has been providing legal advice and representation to the CEOs, Boards and Councils of public bodies. With a team of twenty five specialist lawyers, we are one of Ireland’s largest legal service providers in this area of law.

We pride ourselves on the provision of high level strategic advice to statutory bodies which takes into account the legal frameworks of the statutory bodies and that of their key stakeholders.

Commited to providing a high quality and excellent service to our clients, we advise across a number of areas including oral hearings, complaints processes and procedures, prosecution of offences, High Court Appeals and Judicial Review proceedings.

In recognition of the increasingly complex statutory frameworks within which public bodies operate, and the pressure on public bodies to reduce legal risk and costs, we also have a dedicated Public and Regulatory advisory and projects team, with expertise in areas including:

  • Scoping and delivering projects to drive process improvement for our clients and implement change across key regulatory functions.
  • Carrying out audits of regulatory bodies’ decision making, processes and procedures, including identifying key areas of risk together with possible solutions.

As a mark of the firm’s expertise, two of the partners in this Department, JP McDowell and Eimear Burke co-authored the first Irish legal textbook on professional regulatory law. The textbook is entitled “Disciplinary Procedures in the Statutory Professions” (Bloomsbury, 2011).

Sharing knowledge with our clients is at the forefront of our practice. Our team regularly provides legal updates and hosts seminars for clients and persons with an interest in this area of law.
